Search for information from FNIC's own collection.

WebMedLit

This is a great service! Based on abstracts from 18 mainstream medical journals coupled to an Excite search engine, it allows you to gain an overview of important recent research papers on a regular basis in whichever area interests you.

PEN gopher search

The Penn State University gopher. An extensive collection of text documents, including the International Food and Nutrition Database, containing newsletters, fact sheets, bibliographies, research summaries, and other nutrition-related materials. Searchable by subject or keyword.

FDA search

Search the FDA's web server for nutrition documents. Not all FDA web pages are available from here, but others can be sourced at : http://www.fda.gov/search.html.

AGRICOLA gopher search

AGRICOLA is a gigantic agricultural data base under the wing of the USDA and has over 3 million data entries.

One Globe: Agriculture Business Directory: search engine

Search for keywords under various industry classifications (producers, consultants, vets etc).

CDC WONDER

Need to register first (and reregister if not used for a week). Search individual CDC data bases, but no overall search engine. None are specifically nutritional. "Single point of access to a variety of CDC reports, guidelines, and even
numeric public health data". Also list of health links.

Fnspec archive

Very useful access to recent postings on this mailing list, the primary one for extension nutrition specialists in the US. Can search (at present one month's worth) by thread, by subject, by date or by author.

USDA's School Meal Initiative for Healthy Children

USDA initiative with information on school meals program in the US.. This page has search engines for school meals-related data bases, information about the national program. There is also a gopher site .

ELFIS: German agric.science literature search

German agricultural science literature data bank search engine.

Texas Agricultural Univerity: Human Nutrition articles (search engine)

Articles from variety of sources, some lay some health professional, some quite old. Search engine with simple Boolean terms.

Arizona Dietetic Project Search

Search within Arizona Dietetic Project, which is mostly lay information on diet, (but has some clinical nutrition links).

Academic Press Quick Search Page: Search by title, author, abstract and keyword fields of all the journals published by Academic Press which they have put abstracts on-line.
Elsevier journals search engine,: There are lots of food, food science and some nutrition journals in this stable. The search engine only returns the TOC without any abstracts at present from 1996, and you cannot confine the search to a particular journal.
ADA: search for a dietitian: Search for a registered dietitian in the USA, based on area, type of service etc.
Beaucoup search engine collection: Actually they include subject lists along with search engines and there is more medical than nutrition. In regard to nutrition, the collection is pretty modest.
BUBL: Library resource with gopher searchable data base of academic journal tables of contents and some abstracts, including J Nutrition for Elderly, J. Nutrition in Recipe & Menu Development, Home Health Care Services Quarterly, J of Nutritional Immunology, J. Food Products Marketing, J of Applied Aquaculture etc.
Chapman & Hall Nutrition Resource Center: Searchable list of nutrition texts.
Environmental Organization WebDirectory: Search engine and category listings generally around the alternative, organic, vegetarian area.
Food Additive search (Australia): Search for information on food additives by coding number or name.
FoodNet: food service, food news: "This service enables you to search current food news and the FoodNet database." Food service and food consumer focus.
Food Scientists on the Web: "An unoffical Internet directory to the personal homepages of food scientists. " At present (1/97) around 50 listings.
Food service directory (Provisions): Searchable data base of food service industry sites on the Internet and a separate one of food and beverage industry professionals.
Healthy.Net: Health food products: search engine from Healthy Net: Search for vitamin and other health food store product listings. Returns brands and prices. Not clear whether this is just from one health store company or a wider range.
Nutritional Dictionary: From an orthomolecular company, brief definitions of common nutritional terms relevant to that area.
TEKTRAN data base of agricultural research (USDA): USDA's Agricultural Research Service has produced TEKTRAN, a searchable DB to assist fast tracking commercial awareness of basic research into agricultural and (mainly animal) nutrition.
Univ.of Minnesota site search engine: An experimental search engine which searches for resources generated by themselves at this leading Internet site for on-line nutrition extension. In their own words, their intent is: "..to have faculty and graduate students provide current information and resources to the public about food science and nutrition. The interface is crude and there is little in the database, BUT, we intend to help this resource grow."

Blonz Guide to nutrition resources

The author is a major figure in lay nutrition publication in the US. This is a large, regularly updated, mixed collection of food, nutrition, and more general health and medical links, with a lot of effort put into the visual aspects of the web pages. The links do not have commentary. There is an excellent search engine collection.

CSIRO: Dpt. Food Science and Technology

A long list of nutrition resources, with some descriptions. Particularly strong on university food science departments, food law and safety, the food industry, and a useful resource for Australian food sites.

Dietitian On-line

Based in Ireland, the two authors (a paediatrician and a dietitian) have put enormous effort into this site which is one of the most elaborately designed visually of all the nutrition web guides. The list of other nutrition sites is not annotated and is alphabetically presented. The links have become a less prominent feature now that they have stregthened their focus onto providing various on-line services for dietitians and dietetic students.

Quite a long list of nutrition resources, especially those relevant to public health, with comments.

Martindale: nutrition resources

Extensive collection of links with brief descriptions of content. The organisation of the site is unusual, and there is a good deal of medical content not directly related to nutrition. The nutrition topics include nutrition courses, university departments, dictionaries and multi-media. There are good links to plant genetics and toxicology sites.links.

D.McKinnon's list of food science sites

One of the best lists for food science, quite a lot of description and very strong on food science departments and organisations.

Nutrici�n Humana

A good set of links and resources relevant to Mexico, categorised by the type of Internet source that the material comes from (web pages, FTP, news groups etc). Within categories, items are offered in alphabetical order without commentary. It helps if you can understand Spanish, as this is tje language in which it is written!

Lists from the mainstream Internet searchers

Yahoo: Yahoo is one of the main searchable general content Internet directories in the world, but it is not particularly strong on nutrition.
LookSmart: Go to Health & Fitness: Diet &Nutrition for a reasonable selection of nutrition sites under various categories, with site descriptions. Although Looksmart is a general subject catalogue rather than a nutrition one, is is well worth looking at just for its extraordinarily clever use of java scripting technology to make the search process easy.
Galaxy: Several ways to access the nutrition lists, which are moderate in length but unannotated and not particularly systematic in coverage. You can get a short list from here, or go to a higher level index level , or via Dietetics and Community health

Arizona Health Sciences Library: Their nutrition guide has resources listed by subject and by media type.
The Arizona Dietetic Project: Mixture of nutrition and medical links, organised into public, medical and other professional categories. "The mission of the ADP is to provide accurate and timely information on the use of nutrition as medical therapy...Links to sites providing related materials; original materials to be added as available".
Clements Library Nutrition links: St.Johns University, Minnesota. Moderate collection of links.
Directory of Nutrition booklets (CSIRO, Australia): Hyperlinked list of organisations that put out nutrition pamphlets. "The purpose .. is to provide a list of "reputable organisations that produce books, pamphlets and other resources about food, nutrition, safe food handling practices and health. "
Colorado State Uni: "CyberMenu": Interesting project, with annotated listings. "This site is the beginning of a very ambitious nutrition links management program and web-based nutrition education program offered by the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Colorado State University. The purpose of this new site is to provide a variety of different methods of viewing nutrition links. In the near future individuals from around the world will be able to submit their favorite URL and have it published within one week. All URLs will be cross-referenced and presented in a variety of groupings."

Kansas State Extension list: Classified into lifespan cycle,clinical, exercise, vegetarianism, nutrient profiles etc. See also excellent annotated list of Extension resources throughout the US.
MedWeb: Nutrition: Categorised into guides, sites, data bases, with moderate set of urls for each.
University of Minnesota: sites of interest: The Department of Food Science and Nutrition at University of Minnesota has one of the stronger Internet presences in nutrition. Their home page contains lots of useful nutrition links, particularly in extension and food science. The information is not particularly well organised, however.
NALUSDA Nat.Agric.Library: Electronic Sources of Food and Nutrition Information: Rebecca Thompson wrote this document several years ago as a long and librarian-oriented plain text paper on the impact of computer age technology on nutrition resources. It is now showing its age (last updated 9/94) and is strong on gopher, bulletin board and data base sites.
Oregon University Nutrition Resources: Moderately length list of web sites, with some annotation. Particularly strong on commercial food companies.
San Jose University: list of nutrition links.: Compiled by Edith Crowe, Nutrition & Food Science librarian, San Jose State University. "..some basic sites that are good starting points for exploring the Internet in the areas of Nutrition, Food Science and Hospitality Management".

Linkstar: commercial products search engine: Try entering nutrition into their search page and you will get a long list of commercial nutrition products, many of them with a supplement or alternative flavour.
Autonomy Vitamin and Nutrition Links on the Web: Particularly useful list of commercial nutrition entities.

Oregon University Nutrition Resources: Moderately length list of web sites, with some annotation, but particular strong point is commercial food companies.

Dietetics Online: From the Dietitian On-Line AOL forum home page, some selective and useful links to professional. international and computer software nutrition resources. Not annotated.
Nerd World : NUTRITION: Part of a much larger Internet directory. The nutrition section has a reasonably long list in alphabetical order but it is not clear what logic went into the choice and whilst annotated, the descriptions appear to be self generated (e.g. aka Alta Vista).
Nutrition links - WAIS search :: Someone (from New Jersey) has done a broad nutrition WAIS search and these are the results! Turns out to be an interesting, eclectic but rather unorganised list of resources without annotation. A number are no longer reachable either.
`Autonomy' Vitamin and Nutrition Links on the Web: Long list of (mainly US-based) commercial nutrition entities.
Nutri Link!: Dietetic student has set up a site to encourage participation from others to put up: "stories, columns and pictures via e-mail. These pages will be updated once per month. Selected contributions will be published on this site."
The Nutrition Expert: "The Nutrition Expert, is a group of Registered dietitians dedicated to providing high quality nutrition information to the web community." At present not a lot of material, some links, some patient information.
Welltech: Nutrition links: Small but annotated list.
University of Akron's list of nutrition sites: Moderate number of nutrition resources listed under "academic", "governement..." etc.
Lifelines Nutrition & Fitness Links: Gets LOTS of visitors, for a fairly eclectic mix of nutrition resources.
Tlahui nutrition links: Mexican and other nutrition links. Unannotated and in Spanish. Also to be found at http://www.cam.org/~tlahuic/menutri.html#nutri
Everything Dietetics: Maintained by Jeremy Smith (a dietitian who works at a military hospital in Kentucky). He has provided a small set of links to sites of particular interest to dietitians, food industry and sports nutrition.
Tom's Nutrition Home Page: A US dietitian who offers to answer on-line questions about nutrition, has a nutrition tup of the week and some links.

Tony Helman's catalogue of Nutrition mailing lists: A fairly comprehensive catalogue of mailing lists for nutrition professionals. It does not deal with mailing lists for the public, nor with bulletin boards.
Dietitian Online: mailing lists, newsgroups: Mainly food and food science discussion groups.
Tile: Food-related mailing lists: Main list lacks descriptions, but a short description is accessible in an associated file.
Arizona Health Sci. Libr.: nutrition discussion groups: Short list.
One Globe: Agricultural mailing lists and usenet groups: Good set of agricultural mailing lists and some news groups (including meat and dairy ones). Not always much descriptive detail.
Fnspec archive: Archive for postings of the primary mailing list for extension nutrition specialists in the US.
Pedi-rd mailing list: "Pedi-RD is an e-mail mailing list for dietitians and other health care professionals interested in neonatal/perinatal and pediatric nutrition" Another new mailing list is NS-net, which is related to nutrition support and parenteral nutrition. Pediatric Nutrition On-line: On-line bulletin board for healthcare professionals working with children and their nutritional needs. Uses special software to access the bulletin board, which is provided at the site as well.
