National Policy and Research Center on Nutrition and Aging
Invaluable resource housed at Florida International University. The Center "enhances the implementation of the Older Americans Act Elderly Nutrition Program through knowledge building, policy analysis, training, technical assistance and information dissemination on nutrition and aging. Reflecting national cost containment trends, the Center is dedicated to:
  1. Risk-based outreach to serve the most nutritionally needy elders,
  2. Expansion of nutrition services in aging programs including congregate and home-delivered meals programs to reduce malnutrition
  3. Multidisciplinary nutrition care management to improve quality of life, promote independence, and decrease premature nursing home admissions and hospitalizations."
The web site has documents from or on: Administration on Aging, Morning Meals on Wheels Breakfast program, bibliographies, American Dietetic Association documents, as well as its own links section.
The Merck Manual of Geriatrics: Nutrition
Excellent summary of the problems of geriatric nutrition in plain text format but with tables.
Nutrition screening in older people: Annual Reviews of Nutrition
Excellent summary of the literature.
Nutrition Screening Initiative.
A joint project to improve nutritional screening of elderly patients in primary care, undertaken by the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Dietetic Association and the National Council on Aging. The web site describes the project, but also offers some toold, such as an assessment questionnaire for patients on their nutritional health and assessment tools for physicians, There is also an Acrobat article on The Role of Nutrition in Chronic Disease Care.

Administration on Aging
They have lots of material for lay and health professionals alike in this section of the DHSS. Includes a huge links section and information on their Elderly Nutrition Program, which provides meals to the elderly in group and home settings and for which there has been a formal evaluation which is available on-line.

Am J Clin Nutr special issue on nutrition in aging
Special October 1997 issue devoted to articles on nutrition in the elderly. Includes full text in .pdf format of editorials, and abstracts of research articles and reviews. Topics include the geriatric perspective on: vitamin B12 in the elderly, the role of micronutrients (including thiamin, carotene and vitamin C), nutrition and cognitive function and cardiovascular nutrition.
American Dietetic Association: Gerontological Nutritionists
The ADA has a number of resources related to nutrition in the elderly, including a specialised practice group on the elderly. However, you need to be a member to access this part of the site. Fortunately this practice group also has its own web page, with information on resources and on the group itself, its activities and meetings. There are also some links, and bibliographies. The ADA also has some position statements relevant to the elderly
American Dietetic Association: Nutrition, aging, and the continuum of care
Long, referenced plain text position statement published in 1996. Another position statement concerns Liberalized diets for older adults in long-term care.

British Dietitians Association: Nutrition Advisory Group for Elderly People

National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging
This organisation operates within the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and "acquires and preserves data relevant to gerontological research, processing as needed to promote effective research use, disseminates them to researchers, and facilitates their use." They have a newsletter, links and a collection of data on aging that includes health and nutrition relevant information.

National Institute on Aging
Part of the NIH, the web site has information on their research, publications, links to related sites.

Organisational information and a range of documents, bibliographies etc.
Nutrition in the elderly
Part of "Multidisciplinary Education in Geriatrics and Aging" web site, which offers "a hypermedia, computerized learning experience. The computerized modules combine text with video segments, slides, animations, interactive experiences, graphs, and tables." As yet a good deal of it is plain text.
Women's Health and Aging Study
From the National Institute on Aging of the NIH, this is a plain text report on-line (with tables and references) that includes information on body composition, haematological and biochemical nutrtiional status of elderly women in the USA.

Full transcript of this famous hearing by the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs held on June 22, 1977, at which various well known figures (including Dr.Ben Feingold) spoke with a view generally supportive of a link between diet and mental health, views that at that time were not widely accepted.
