Nat.Heart, Lung and Blood Inst. report on hypertension: 1997
The Sixth Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure is an update of the previous 1992 guideline from the NHLBI of the NIH. It "contains important new information for clinicians.. and was developed using evidence-based medicine and consensus to make recommendations to clinicians." It is in Acrobat format (546k).

Commercial venture (carried information about pharmaceutical products) with lots of information for lay and health professionals. At present dietitian Lisa Hark is working on a specific nutrition section, but for the time being there is a certain amount of nutrition information already on site. For example, regular news of the latest research findings from the clinical journals, some of which are collected by topic (e.g. homocysteine and heart disease).

Cholesterol Lowering in CHD: critical review
From Bandolier Evidence Based Medicine journal, a good review of some meta-analysis on this important but difficult issue.

Another article from the same journal that is well worth reading is on NNDs ("Number Needed to Treat") for lipid lowering.

Cholesterol Screening - An Annotated Bibliography
From Primary Care teaching topics at Univ.of Chicago, a reasonable list of references with comments and, where appropriate, direct links to the Medline abstract of the relevant article.

The Antioxidant Vitamins and Cardiovascular Disease: critical review
Very detailed and extensive literature review on this subject published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (Ann Intern Med. 1995;123:860-872), from authors based at McMaster University. As one might expect given this background, this is an excellent critical review of the literature and a wonderful starting point for any consideration of this promising but still controversial topic. As it was published in 1995, it is still reasonably current.
DASH research home page
DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) was a research study designed to test the effect of dietary patterns on blood pressure. The web site is designed to communicate the results of the first phase study to the general and health professional public, and allow interested parties to learn about the current second phase. There is a (as yet) short list of publications, lay summary of the main results, and links to other relevant sites.
NHLBI: Child and adolescent health curriculum materials catalogue
"flyer describes the curriculum materials on the Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovasular Health (CATCH) available from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Information Center. An order form is also included. These materials were shown to work in the largest school-based program ever conducted to help teach elementary school students and their parents healthy habits to prevent heart disease. Strangely there is no readily visible explanation who this site belongs to, but it appears to be a non-commercial lay site dedicated to healthy nutrition for heart disease prevention. The site has information on the latest research findings, nutrition advice and reports on healthy nutrition for heart disease prevention campaigns around the US. There is a search engine.

HeartInfo - Heart Information Network
Lots of resources on heart disease, such as news, research reports, links etc. Especially suited for the lay public, and has plenty of nutrition content.
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
Lay information on cholesterol, also has Latino lay publications, which are bilingual English and Spanish booklets on CVS risk factors and recipes for healthy heart eating.

One particular program is entitled Live Healthier, Live Longer, and is part of the NHLBI's Cholesterol Education Program.
