Organisations

Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders, Inc
"a nonprofit organization that provides information about anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, compulsive exercising, and other less well-known food and weight disorders. Our material includes details about recovery and prevention". The site has a great deal of useful information, including some of the less commonly covered eating disorders. The on-line material is mainly plain text and targeted at the lay audience, including the athlete, but also has bibliographies for the health professional and links.
National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders
Information on anorexia and eating disorders.
National Eating Disorders Organization
Part of a private not-for-profit hospital web site, this organisation is, in their own words: "one of the oldest eating disorder organizations in the United States. Our focus is on education, prevention and providing treatment resources for individuals, families, students, health care professionals, and the media around the world." The site has some mainly plain text short lay explanations about anorexia, binge and other eating disorders, as well as some information for schools, with a reading list.
The American Anorexia/Bulimia Association Inc.
"provides information to sufferers, their families and friends". Information about the organisation and some lay explanation of what the conditions are.
Alliance to Fight Eating Disorders

Promoting Healthy Body Image Body Image
A background paper produced for the Best Start program, a government funded project in Ontario which "aims to improve the health of women and families before, during, and after pregnancy."

The manual is divided into four sections:

  • A survey of the literature on body image, food and weight problems, current research and information about the historical and cultural determinants of body image for girls and women of childbearing years
  • An elaboration of population-based strategies for promoting healthy body image.
  • Health promotion, community mobilization and health communication are shown in action.
  • A discussion of health promotion project ideas and activities.
