Chatty editorial style article from Bandolier Evidence Based Medicine journal, which looks at some research into the prevalence and effectiveness of treating this condition, both in the US and the UK.

Recommendations to Prevent and Control Iron Deficiency in the United States: CDC
From a special 1998 issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, this is a very throrough document on iron deficiency diagnosis, prevention and treatment.


Guidelines for the use of iron supplements to prevent and treat iron deficiency anemia.
A publication of the International Vitamin A Consultative Group (IVACG), which was established by ILSI "dedicated to reducing the prevalence of iron deficiency and other nutritionally preventable anemias worldwide. It sponsors international meetings and scientific reviews and convenes task forces".

American Meat Institute
The Institute is the national trade association of meat packers and processors, representing "70% of the nation's beef, pork, lamb, veal and turkey products and their suppliers throughout America." The site has facts and contacts for the Institute, plus information on nutrition, meat, food safety, animal welfare, conferences and news for the meat and poultry industries.

A public information site on iron-related disorders from a non-profit body in the USA. They provide "information about iron-related disorders and disease that has been reviewed by physicians, researchers and scientists". Topics include iron deficiency anaemia as well as other anaemia and overload syndromes. The material is indeed well written, orthodox and nicely laid out. A site well worthwhile visiting.

Iron Overload Diseases Association
This is a major American group of interested lay public and health professionals. The web site has information on diagnosis and treatment, mainly for lay readers but also some targetted at dietitians and nutritionists.
Preventing Accidental Iron Poisoning: FDA Backgrounder
FDA background paper from 1997 on the new FDA regulations no labelling iron supplements and iron containing drugs. Useful contextual information on what is the leading cause of poisoning death in young children in the USA.
