General nutrient information

Pick of the crop

Nutrient Information: American Society for Nutr Sciences
Summaries of the biochemistry, food sources and clinical aspects of a wide range of nutrients each written by an invited expert by the American Society for Nutritional Sciences

Lay information on common vitamins and minerals from the US government
Hopkins Technology web site has placed on line mainly plain text information on a range of nutrients, and a little about good food sources of the nutrient. Look down the list to around publication number 29.
Vitamins and Coenzymes
Biochemically oriented notes from Dpt.Biochemistry at Indiana State University on vitamins and minerals and their functions.
Understanding Vitamins
Good balanced and referenced article on the possible benefits as well as possibile problems of vitamin supplementation, set in the context of the physiological functions of the vitamins. It is part of an alternative HIV web site and so the focus is on that area of clinical application, but by no means restricted to it. There is also a more specific page on nutritional supplementation and AIDS.
Vitamin and mineral facts: Cyberdiet
Full RDI table plus some simple lay information on food sources, physiological functions, deficiency and toxicity symptoms.

Vitamin and Mineral content of plants
From the University of Maryland, James A. Duke has put together a set of on-line phytochemical and ethnobotanical data base. This enables you to query the composition relative to a large number of constituent compounds for any of some 2,000 species, "including most of the more important foods, spices, herbs and medicinal plants". The nutrients in this data base include vitamins and minerals.

HealthLink Herbs and Supplements Database
Part of a wider site with membership options, this site provides quite detailed information on vitamins and minerals, from a supplement prescribing perspective. The most useful way to access it is to enter "vitamin" in the search engine.

General Malnutrition

Micronutrient Initiative
Data bases on iron, iodine and vitamin A deficiencies.
The OMNI Project
Opportunities for Micronutrient Interventions. Organisation based in Washington which has focus on public health aspects of micronutrition nutrition, such as vitamin A, iodine, iron etc, particularly paediatric aspects. Their site gives information about the organisation and access to their publications (both on-line and to download). These vary from workshop reports on public health and regional perspectives, to practical manuals on fortofying sugar with viamin A.
PAMM (Program Against Micronutrient Malnutrition
Collaborative program with the motto "Engineering Innovative Solutions to End Hidden Hunger". The web site has links, malnutrition news, program reports and plans, information on iodine deficiency and student lecture notes.
Targeting Malnutrition - Isotopic Tools for Evaluating Nutrition Worldwide
Plain text document in several chapters from the International Atomic Energy Agency around the theme of on the uses of medical isotopes in nutrition practice, but including topics such as vitamin A and iron deficiencies, bone disease, breastfeeding and body composition.
WHO Nutrition Programme
This is the new website for the WHO nutrition and is a major public health nutrition resource. The organisation itself has a focus on malnutrition and public health, including vitamin A, diarrhoeal disease, iron and iodine. Their site reflects this.

It provides information on research projects, on global nutrition data banks and its work on setting global nutritional requirement settings.

In regard to malnutrition, there is brief information on:

There is also information on its goals, its collaborative partners (with links), its publications and documents and on scheduled meetings. The only disappointment is that the actual nutrition material provided is very brief, as this is more description than anything. Nevertheless, many of these documents can be located elsewhere (and are referred to elsewhere in their relevant sections within this guide.) A web site well worth visiting.

The worldwide magnitude of protein-energy malnutrition
Plain text article with several tables on data derived from the WHO Global Database on Child Growth, this focuses on prevalence of malnutrition relative to children with inadequate growth and the findings of national surveys in developing countries.
