List of health organisations

This is the Medline site's list, and is not particularly long. It is complemented by their list of directories - health organisation and health professional directories. There are many other sites providing such lists, including the mainstream search engines and directories (e.g. Google).

List of NGOs

List of non-governmental organistations. This is not specific to nutrition, but many of them work in the developing world or disadvantaged communities, and have an interest in food security issues.

List of Canadian health and nutrition-related organisations, particularly governmental ones. Links to web sites where available and descriptions of the organisation, rather than the web site.

NAL list: agribusiness and food industry associations

Very large listing of agribusiness, food industry & forest industry associations on the Internet, compiled by Carol Singer of the USDA's National Agricultural Library. Listed by geographical area, including international. This new resource from the Agricultural Trade and Marketing Information Center section of NALUSDA won't win any prizes for graphic appeal, but the breadth of research that went into this document is extraordinary.

Union of International Asssociations: Health Care web sites

Superb list of international organisations with a health focus which have web sites. No explanations but the list is long. There is also an alphabetical list on the parent site.

International Food Information Council Foundation(IFIC)

This is an old site but has been extensively reworked and is now an excellent site for food and food safety information. Lots of links and resources from IFIC (e.g. Gallup poll results, information for consumers, educators, children etc.)

International Center for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research, Bangladesh

Organisational information, abstracts from some recent issues of their journal: Journal of Diarrhoeal Diseases Research.

International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI)

A food industry body with a strong profile in sponsoring publication, education and conference activity. "nonprofit, worldwide foundation established in 1978 to advance the understanding of scientific issues relating to nutrition, food safety, toxicology, and the environment. By bringing together scientists from academia, government, industry, and the public sector, ILSI seeks a balanced approach to solving problems with broad implications for the well-being of the general public."

Their web site has publication resources, information on meetings, local branches and research. They also have a news section on-line. See in particular the sections on the ILSI Human Nutrition Institute and their Nutrition and Health Promotion Program.

International Society for Molecular Nutrition and Therapy

"a new scientific society which will focus on the mechanisms of specific effects of nutrients and drugs in chronic diseases, their possible interactions as well as the mechanism of their protective or therapeutic action."

International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine

Brief organisational information plus access to Journal of Orthomolecular.Medicine.

International Special Dietary Foods Industries

A WHO collaborating NGO whose aim is to "develop a common policy on minimum composition, utilization, labelling and marketing of foods for special dietary uses, including foods for infants and young children. Promote high ethical standards for marketing of all foods for special dietary uses." The web page has brief information only.

International Union of Nutrition Sciences (IUNS)

Information on IUNS organisational structure and activities, nutrition conferences and some links.

Weight Watchers

Contact information for local chapters, news and on-line forum, nutrition facts and eating plans, nutrition facts, interactive quiz.

Australian Iron Status Advisory Panel

Public health oriented group of Australian experts in iron status disorders. This site contains a great deal of information on the clinical management of iron disorders, particularly iron deficiency. It includes both practical guides for the health professional and technical papers. It is plannaed to also include lay information and position statements in the future.

Australian Nutrition Foundation

Colourful well produced site on Australia's leading nutrition education organisation. The web site has news, the latest newsletter (nicely illustrated), organisational information and catalogue of pamphlets (but no content on-line).

Australian Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition

Newsletter and information about office bearers.

Children's Nutrition Research Centre (Brisbane)

Introductory information.

Chinese Health Foundation of Australia

Information about the foundation and its research and education projects amongst the Australian Chinese community. The material is in English, (although there are some Chinese characters scattered around!).

Dietitians Association of Australia

Some nutrition links, and promised but not yet present ("under construction") are: Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics, professional articles, case studies, research updates, book reviews.

New Zealand Institute Crop and Food Research

Crop and food science research.

National Heart Foundation of Australia

One of the major and most trusted sources of independant information on heart disease and diet for Australian health professions, this web site has their position statements on straightforward as well as more controversial topics, such as the role of iron and heart disease, homocysteine and antioxidants. There is also some lay material.

Event information, some lay information sheets and news.

OTHER NUTRITION ORGANISATIONS: NORTH AMERICA

The Allen Foundation Inc.

Michigan based foundation supporting research and education in healthy nutrition, particularly for children. Organisational information plus reports on past grants can be read on-line.

American Academy of Nutrition

This institution offers several levels of nutrition courses, with some focus on "expanded views on vitamin supplementation". Course information is provided on the site.

American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences

A number of dietetic, food and home economics training programs are based in university departments of Family and Consumer, and this is their national body. The web site is still under construction and is mainly plain text listings of members, accredited programs etc.

The American College for Advancement in Medicine.

"A non-profit alternative medicine society dedicated to educating physicians on the latest findings and emerging procedures in preventive/nutritional medicine." This site contains listings of members, conference information and `bookstore' for ordering only.

American College of Nutrition

The "certification board for nutrition specialists". Information about and for members. Includes some important resources regarding medical nutrition education, such as Nutrition Curriculum Guide For Training Physicians and white paper on medical nutrition education, and some links.

American Council on Science and Health

Non-profit body aimed at interpreting scientific research for lay understanding. According to the web site it works on "consumer education consortium concerned with issues related to food, nutrition, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, lifestyle, the environment and health. " The site has articles and press releases on a range of nutrition related topics, as well as other public health issues.

The American Diabetes Association

Lay nutrition resources.

American Dietetic Association

Lots of material about the ADA itself, its legislative lobbying program, special interest groups, meetings etc. Some of its lay-oriented nutrition information and ADA press releases, plus lists of affiliated organisations and a few links to other nutrition sites.

American Heart Association

Lots of lay information, including nutrition resources, heart disease risk calculator, exercise advice.

American Society for Nutritional Science

Was called American Institute of Nutrition. Research oriented nutrition science organisation. Information on the Institute, its members, meetings and publications, including access to The Journal of Nutrition, Nutrition Notes newsletter. They also have a site more focussed on the journal, nutrition.org.

American Medical Students Association

A few items related to nutrition.

The American Society for Clinical Nutrition

Organisational information, ASCN meetings and press releases, Am.J.Clin.Nutrition. Promises that will soon have position papers and post-graduate courses.

American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN)

This totally revised site now has information on meetings around the world, standards and guidelines on parenteral nutrition, clinical quiz of the month, access to a discussion listserv and audio teleconferences, links to other nutrition sites, information on parenteral and enteral nutrition and a self-assessment quiz.

  Association of Departments and Programs of Nutrition

"A national association of the chairs of nutrition departments and programs. The organization promotes, in cooperation with other educational institutions, government agencies, and industry, the common interests of academic units of nutrition in universities and colleges which offer or are principally responsible for the support of graduate degree programs in nutrition and or the postgraduate training programs in nutrition located in the United States and elsewhere. More than 50 institutions are currently members of this organization." The web site has a very good list of nutrition departments on a state based classification, complete with a clicakable map of the US and email contacts for each department. That alone makes this a most useful site.

Infant Feeding Action Coalition (Canada)

Pro-breast feeding organisation. The site contains lay-oriented resources, links and some more `political' elements (formula company boycott etc).

Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research

"Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research was established in 1991 to support and challenge dietitians to include research in their everyday practice." Brief statement of purpose and research focus on this web page which is part of the Dietitians of Canada web site.

Carolina Population Center

Specialising in large scale nutrition surveys, this North Carolina group have organised the Russia, China and Cebu (Phillipines) population dietary studies, and have provided detailed methodology information and access to raw results and lists of published papers on-line.

FANSA

Several press releases from FANSA, a partnership of four professional societies whose members have joined forces to speak with one voice on food and nutrition issues. Member organizations include: The American Dietetic Association, The American Society for Nutritional Sciences, The American Society for Clinical Nutrition, The Institute of Food Technologists. FANSA's combined membership includes more than 100,000 food, nutrition and medical practitioners and scientists.

Affiliated with Georgetown University, it is "dedicated to improving the health of children and families through national leadership in three key areas: state-of-the-art knowledge, program development, and policy analysis and education." The web site has some very useful on-line nutrition publications in obstetrics and paediatrics in PDF format on subjects such as food safety for children, nutrition intervention effectiveness and breast feeding, organisation and bibliographic data bases and links to other sites.

North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition

Information about the Society, position statements and link to the Association of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Nurses.

OMNI

Opportunities for Micronutrient Interventions. Organisation associated with USAID and based in Washington which has focus on public health aspects of micronutrition nutrition, such as vitamin A, iodine, iron etc, particularly paediatric aspects.

Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine

Have an interest in nutrition and the site has a number of news releases related to this area.

Peace Corps: nutrition projects

Brief invitation to people to join in these projects and explanation of what is required.

Program Against Micronutrient Malnutrition

In collaboration with OMNI (see above). The focus of PAMM is to assist countries with developing their own technical capacity and management systems. Group from Emory University with focus on eliminating micronutrient deficiency. "To accomplish these goals, PAMM works to build public-private sector alliances, strengthen regional and national education and training systems, raise awareness through advocacy at all levels, and to develop standards to establish quality assurance of national micronutrient programs." This page is part of the OMNI site and is descriptive only.

British Nutrition Foundation

News, events, links to other sites, education information, publications and lay material, and a search engine are all available on this colourful site. The lay pamphlets and media releases are on-line, but the professional material (e.g. reports) are not, only information about them.

European Food Information Council (EUFIC)

Non-profit organisation supported by food companies to work with press, health educators and public on food issues. Web site has information on biotech, food safety and a newsletter Food Today, as well as a search engine. There are also some nutrition information on obesity and highligihts of commissioned research on children's views of diet and health. The information is also provided in Spanish, French, Italian and German.

A gopher with information on Oxfam, HungerNet, list of publications. No search engine.

The Nutrition Society (UK)

Organisational information, including publications, special interest groups, register of public health nutritionists and (later on) accredited nutritionists, meetings etc

European Federation of Food Science and Technology

Non-profit association of European food scientists and engineers. Press releases, calendar of food science and technology meetings, and organisational information plus a few food science links.

European Institute for Food and Nutrition Science

Das Europäische Institut für Lebensmittel- und Ernährungswissenschaften based on Hochheim. Their web site has brief information about the Institute, the faculty and a newsletter (with back issues). In German.

European Retinoids Research Group

At present [11/97] pretty much under construction. Has some brief advance information on the Retinoids 97 conference (held in September 1997].

European Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ESPEN)

Information about the Society, meetings, grants, education, links and a very useful list of individual country PEN Societies within Europe.

European Vegetarian Union

Umbrella organisation for many national vegetarian groups. The web site had articles on animal rights and nutrition issues, contact details of member organisations, and can be accessed in many languages.

Federation of European Nutrition Societies

Consisting of 24 European nutrition societies, each representing one country. Web site has organisational information, including list of the various constituent member societies (with contact information but unfortunately not links to their web sites), as well as links to other nutrition resources.

Italian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition

Site in Italian for this large (>900 member) organisations. The site has organisational information and announcements relating to their Scientific Congress held in late November 1997.

Center for Nutrition and Toxicology, Sweden

Within the Karolinska Institutet of the Department of Biosciences this organisation has joint affiliations, being partly university teaching and part government research institution. It "performs research on nutrition and toxicology using molecular biology techniques, and provides education on preventive nutrition, nutritional toxicology and molecular biology, thereby constituting an interface between scientists and the rest of society."

The site has organisational information, a few links, information on meetings and a list of staffs' published papers, web pages for its many individual units, of which the two directly nutritional ones are the Unit for Molecular Nutrition and the Unit for Preventive Nutrition.

A body which carries out public health research. The web site has some of their reports on-line, including information on health systems research, sociodemographic context of health and health knowledge, etc.
